Origin of Yuan Shi Dian Therapy

Yuan Shi Dian (原始點, "Origin Point") therapy was created by the Chinese physician, Chao Han Chang. About 20 years ago, his wife suffered from breast cancer. After surgery, the cancer recurred and metastasized. Her pain worsened day by day, until even morphine could not control it. While searching for a way to ease her pain, Dr. Chang discovered that massaging her in the groin area relieved pain in the buttocks. He began to realize that one does not treat pain at its site, but rather via other places. He named the places that could be used to relieve pain "Yuan Shi Dian" (origin points). After years of research, he found all the Yuan Shi Dian of the human body and made a map and an instructional video. He released this information freely, for all to share and benefit from.

Anyone Can Perform Yuan Shi Dian Therapy

Dr. Chang designed Yuan Shi Dian Therapy so that medical training is not neccessary to perform it. He hopes it can, therefore, provide benefit to the general public. Yuan Shi Dian does not have a complicated theory. Its map of points is simple and complete. There is no invasive treatment (as in acupuncture or bloodletting) and no dangerous techniques (as in osteopathy). Thanks to Dr. Chang's kindness and selflessness, Yuan Shi Dian information is completely open and free. Anyone can download it from the official website and follow the instruction manual to help friends and family.

Yuan Shi Dian Map

At the top of this article is the Yuan Shi Dian map of the human body. It is the essence of Yuan Shi Dian therapy. With this image, you can treat your friends' and relatives' pain or other problems. The red lines on the map indicate Yuan Shi Dian which can be massaged (pushed) during treatment. Every place on a patient's body has a corresponding Yuan Shi Dian to treat it. The different colored areas on the map indicate which Yuan Shi Dian to use via the legend at the bottom of the image. For example, the lavender color encompasses the calf, chest, ribs, lower abdomen, upper and lower back, and forearms. If pain or any discomfort occurs in these regions, it can be treated using the Yuan Shi Dian of the upper and lower back (on both sides of the thoracic spine and lumbar spine).

Basic treatment

As most Yuan Shi Dian are located in the deeper part of the fascia (tissue that surrounds muscles), one must push hard to massage them. It is common to use an elbow or thumb joint (after making a fist) to stimulate Yuan Shi Dian. Massage tools are also effective.

Use the Yuan Shi Dian map to identify the Yuan Shi Dian to stimulate. Start massaging from the top end of the range of Yuan Shi Dian and work your way down to the other end of the range. Press deeply with your elbow, thumb, or massage tool for at least 10 seconds before moving a few millimeters down the range and pressing again. The patient usually feels sore at the point being pressed. If the intensity of the soreness is unbearable, decrease the pressure but lengthen the time of stimulation. Repeat a range at least three times. By the third time, the patient's soreness should be lessened. Now massage and knead only the tighter and more painful points. In these tight and painful areas, you will feel what feel like knots when you press deeply. Knead the knots horizontally to loosen them.

Yuan Shi Dian are usually found bordering bone, such as on the sides of the spine. Be careful not to press on the bone when massaging.
